How To Maintain a Social Life on a Low Income

November 22, 2021

One of the major 911 for young person’s today, is to have fun, live free and just enjoy life. When we leave University, Community College, or Trade School we are filled with high expectations and anxiety of the next move towards the future, especially when it comes on to finding a job and making the “Big Bucks”.

As the famous singer Tessanne Chin Sang “When it all comes tumbling down”, that’s how we feel when the daunting feeling of after we have worked so hard, the weekend comes and the first pay cheque is as small as a mustard seed, only faithful enough to pay the bills.

Some young professionals were tricked by movies to believe that when we get the first pay cheque, we will have enough money to shop till you drop and or begin our social lives.

We had gotten used to the concept of having someone assisting us financially for all our years. From clinging unto our mother’s clutch purse to daddy’s credit card, the thought of the many different bills, taxes, food, clothing and transportation, never really occurred

With a situation as such, where all your pay cheque goes up in the air as smoke. How do you maintain a social life?

The tricks of maneuvering these issues are:

Two for One Pizza

As silly as it sounds, it makes a huge sense when you and your friends can pull together once a week, or every two weeks and just chill. Food is an essential part of socializing and as such we often go to restaurants to eat with good friends.

With your income that is low and is not able to manage added expenses, Domino’s pizza always comes to the rescue, as a matter of fact, every Tuesday, they provide a deal called ‘Two for One’ pizza. This is where you can buy two pizzas for the price of one. This can be a good way to socialize with fiends over food, while on a budget.

Parks

Mhmmmmm, this is a way you can just relax! Connecting with mother nature and do the most with your friends. From chilling on the grass, to dancing with the girls and just playing football with the boys. The Park is another essential way that we can bring the social in socialize. Parks are great hang out spots, look at Devon House, its spacious, has food and great ice cream, it’s the right type of fun when you want to hang out with friends without worrying about disturbing others. Organizing a park date can be a good way to socialize, get some fresh air and save some money all at the same time.

Movie Night

Now did someone say movie night!

Gone are the days when only your next-door neighbor had a Tv, almost everyone has a TV in their house and not to mention Wi-Fi. The fact that your income is so low, spending $750 JMD and more for a movie ticket, is a squid game.  Not to mention the price you would pay for snacks and drinks for yourself and or your friend. It just wouldn’t work! Nowadays almost everyone has Netflix or another paid movie site subscription. Instead of going out, why not just stay in, you have over 100 movies you can watch with your friends, and you’ll even be cozier at home.

Plus, that two for one pizza from dominoes would be the best fit for this scene.

Socializing is necessary and with mental health being a big factor for a lot of people, let's use the little we have and make much out of it
