6 Ways to Begin Your Financial Literacy Journey

November 29, 2021

Growing up you may have heard the saying “knowledge is power.” We all want financial freedom but do you know how to achieve it? The starting point to financial freedom is educating yourself about finance.

If you have a desire to know more about finance, these six (6) ways will teach you.

  1. Watch videos on YouTube - This is one of my favorite platforms and probably yours too. You can literally type anything finance related in the search bar and it will pop up. For example, how to start a business.

  1. Join online classes - Classes on various topics are offered online. You can find the ones geared towards learning about different aspects of finance. You are sometimes scrolling on Facebook or Instagram and they are being advertised. One way you can access this is through the real success summit which is a legitimate organization that hosts free master classes online with experts on the subject of finance.

  1. Sign up for courses - If you join the free classes online, the teachers will offer their courses. This will come at a price but when you join the free master classes they usually come at a much-discounted price.

  2.

  1.  Research- This can be done by reading books and other materials. A good book I found to read, that is highly recommended by experts is Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Letcher. You can also use search engines such as Google, which we all use, to find and read about whatever it is that you need to educate yourself on. You must however evaluate the credibility of the source and the accuracy of the information. The other avenue is by reading publications or articles on areas of finance. This can be done by reading blogs, newspaper articles and columns put out by reputable sources.

  1.  Follow financial experts- One of the best advice I've heard when it comes to social media, is to use it to educate yourself and learn, and not just for entertainment and socialization purposes. You can subscribe to the channels of the people already working in the field. Many of these types of channels can be found on YouTube. You can also follow them on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. They usually give advice, tips and information on their platforms. Some people you can follow are Richard Branson, Richard Harrington, Jessen James, Kalilah Reynolds, Sharon Lechter and Tai Lopez.

  1. Talk to your bank advisors- You can ask questions directly to your advisers regarding aspects of finance. For example, you may find something in your research that you would like clarity on. Speak to your adviser about it and ask for their take on the matter. We are living in a very interactive society today. The banks or financial institutions give out content via their representatives, interact with them online. Currently Barita Investments Limited have some advice videos that pops up when you are watching YouTube. You can reach out and ask questions. Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS) also host some finance segments on their YouTube channel, check them out, ask questions and learn from the content being provided. Feel free to reach out and ask questions.

Since becoming an adult I've come to understand that knowledge without application isn't power. So now that you've read the tips and you're educating yourself. Set your goals and put what you've learnt into practice.

What are some of your tips? share them and give me your views on my tips in the comments section below.

  1. Listen and read online about Financial Tips. One important principle I have learnt is to "Pay yourself first"
Treat your savings like an expense or a bill and put it in your budget as a regular ”payment” . Make savings payment a priority. This is an effective tool to use .

Also, it is always good to have different forms of income such as passive income which can be achieved through investing in stocks which will intern provide you with didvidens. Please to always remember to do your due diligence before committing to any form of investing.
